True tales from the trenches, inspiring

This collection of first-person tales, compiled by Ms. Janek (Founder of the “Long Island Breakfast Club”, a Jobseeker Group) is a testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of adversity. While the title may seem counterintuitive at first, the reader will find nuggets of wisdom in each story of persons forced to reinvent themselves in a changing economy. Each of them found new ways after an unexpected job transition to use their talents and experience to find a new niche to not only earn a living, but also rise Phoenix-like to unexpected heights and do things they might never have imagined. It’s also a testament to the power of networking in today’s economy for mutual support, gathering job market intelligence and valuable feedback from others invested in your success as you navigate the frightening and turbulent times when you’re “between gigs” as they say. How do I know what a good book this is? Like the others featured in this book, I was forced to reinvent myself and now work as a Career Counselor in our County Dept of Labor helping persons on public assistance to re-enter the workforce. It’s a must-read for anyone working in a Career Services / Workforce Development capacity and of course someone who’s trying to find their way after a job loss. Buy it. Read it. Then go out and use the stories as inspiration to do it. You won’t regret it.
INSPIRATIONAL and tool to use!!!!

Fired to Freedom is a timely book given what is currently happening in not only the United States, but all over the world. There is an inherent bias against people 50+. That was not always the case. It used to be that experience was actively rewarded with higher salary and longevity at your company. No more. Now people once they reach that 50+ year threshold face age discrimination. It takes a lot of effort and time reinventing yourself. Valentina Janek’s book showcases how various individuals reinvented themselves after losing their work. It is not easy; age discrimination is real. But, you can reinvent yourself.

Great book about failing down & getting yourself back up. Losing a job can be a blessing in so many ways. Too often people think this only happens to them. Read this book and you will realize how many experience this journey. You will get great insight & have a few laughs. Most important you will learn skills from others how to navigate through.
